Corporate Governance arrangements, whereby guidance and direction are given by a Board or Authority to an enterprise, are being given increased attention in today's project environment. While there is no one model for good corporate governance, there are fundamental characteristics involving informed leadership, appropriate behaviour and managed performance that boards and authorities need to possess to effectively discharge their responsibilities. Good governance relies on people and their behaviour, and on management and assurance systems that provide the methodologies needed to achieve the goals of the enterprise. Implicit in the methodologies are the processes and technologies prudent managers introduce to enable them to effectively manage their activities. The tools are evolving, becoming more complex and comprehensive as the systems, especially IT systems, become more sophisticated. Increasingly, it is the appropriate and thoughtful integration of project and performance management disciplines, systems and cultural behaviour that offers the best potential for project success. CPM2006 will examine the traditional concepts and principles of performance management and how these contribute to the emerging ideas about Corporate Governance with a focus on leadership, stewardship and control.
